MONTGOMERY, Alabama -- Former state Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin of Indian Springs has announced her candidacy for the chairmanship of the Alabama Republican Party.
The current chairman, former state Sen. Bill Armistead, announced last week that he will not seek another two-year term when the party's executive committee meets in Montgomery on Feb. 21.
McClurkin served 16 years in the Legislature before deciding to not run again this year.
McClurkin co-chaired the successful Alabama presidential primary campaign for Mike Huckabee in 2008, and she co-chaired Tim James' run for governor in 2010. She is a former vice-chair of women's affairs for the state Republican Party.
